Purpose Story: Taking care of the unexpected: how HDI Seguros Chile supports communities facing wildfires
Every summer, Chile faces an increasingly familiar threat: severe wildfires that devastate communities and homes. In 2026, as in previous years, wildfires swept across multiple regions – a strong reminder of how suddenly the unexpected can unfold. HDI Seguros Chile, a subsidiary of HDI International, demonstrates with its actions how our Talanx Purpose ‘Together we take care of the unexpected and foster entrepreneurship’ is put into practice.
Supporting communities before the flames erupt
Wildfire prevention is a national priority in Chile, and HDI Seguros Chile has been investing in long‑term resilience. Since August 2025, the company has partnered with Fundación Caritas Chile to deliver the ‘Communities Prepared for Wildfires’ programme. Its aim is to strengthen awareness across high‑risk neighbourhoods by providing practical training, tools and prevention strategies.
As Jorge Moreno, Corporate Manager of Finance, People and Technology, explains:
“We participate in a programme that educates and prepares neighbourhoods at high risk of wildfires. Citizens receive tools and practical training for vegetation clearing, creating firebreaks and developing emergency plans. Today, four neighbourhoods in Valparaíso take part”
Immediate support when wildfires hit
During this year’s wildfires in Concepción – where more than 15,000 hectares were burned, hundreds of homes destroyed and thousands affected – HDI Seguros activated a rapid on‑site inspection plan. Claims staff travelled from Santiago to support colleagues in the region, ensuring swift assessments for motor and household claims.
In many cases, claims were paid within days. As Moreno emphasises:
“When an emergency occurs, we ensure that our claims process is efficient, agile and flexible, adapting to each case.”
Beyond claims support, the company provided emergency housing, essential supplies and clear, step‑by‑step communication for affected customers.
Colleagues making a difference on the ground
Many employees of HDI Seguros volunteer directly in affected areas. They help clear vegetation, support logistics and bring a human presence to communities under stress.
Volunteer and Contract Analyst Héctor Yurazeck reflects:
“We support people through the various insurance policies we offer, but actions like these take it a step further – something people can see and experience directly.”
Others describe deep moments of connection. Miguel Guevara, Reinsurance Supervisor Analyst and volunteer, recalls:
“You could feel the kindness and gratitude in the air, expressed constantly. As long as I can, I will continue supporting these activities.”
Daniel Mujica, Reinsurance Analyst and volunteer, adds: “Amid the sweat and dust, conversations and laughter helped lighten the load. They told us that the area had suffered fires in the past and that what we were doing was truly necessary. They were extremely grateful.”
Whether through prevention, rapid claims processes or direct community support, HDI Seguros Chile demonstrates what it means to take care of the unexpected.
