Andreas Weimer
Meteorologist and mathematician at Hannover Rück
"Metaphorically speaking, I let loose storms, earthquakes and floods on current insurance portfolios – and then I calculate the expected claims amounts and prices of insurance or reinsurance contracts. This is called ‘natural catastrophe modelling’ and it’s one of the main areas of my work. It requires knowledge of geology, meteorology and hydrology, and also of statistics – which I have, because I studied Mathematics and Meteorology, and during my time at university I completed two internships at the Natural Catastrophe department of a reinsurer.
My work is at the interface of natural science and the insurance industry, between practice and applied research – and it is incredibly exciting, diverse and varied."
